Getting a DSLR for Christmas-and-birthday, yay! But now to choose the camera.

I was originally thinking of the D60, as everyone seems to tell me that it's a good camera, though obviously the D40 is better value for money. But then I discovered the D3000 and D5000.

I'm a beginner/intermediate photographer, and I'd be photographing people and random things for the most part - not spectacular landscapes or cityscapes.

The D5000 has a live view LCD, 12 megapixels, video mode, 11 point AF - which all sounds pretty exciting. Does anyone on here use one, or know anything about it?

I was looking at the D5000 in that nikon packet thingie or whatever
it looks good but it's over 1000 dollars. so if it's in your price range, i'd go for it.
i'm actually looking at getting myself the D3000
(a merry christmas to me. ahahah)

It all depends if I can convince parents that I NEED it, and according to kelkoo you can get it for £510 with kit lens! Which seems like a fairly good deal.

The D3000 looks good too though :) I'm a sucker for the live view though.

happy Christmas to us then :D

yes, the live view is nice.
so how much is it regularly in pounds? I don't really know how much of a discount 510 pounds is. lol
(I live in america. ahah)

haha happy christmas!

Um, let's see, £510 is $840.48
so not too bad :)
But I might go for the d60 or d40 instead, if I can still get hold of them. Most reviews are telling me they're just as good/better/cheaper...

dithering!

Oh, so you are still getting a discount.
I actually like the D40 better than the D60. We use D40s in school and my close friend has a D60.
Hm, I don't know if the D40 is necessarily better since I have not used a D3000. But considering the D3000 in the newest model, it may have more tools/ add-ons.
haha sorry if I'm not really helping you make a decision.

I'm kinda in the exact same situation as you. haha. I'm just saving up money and buying it myself though. (I think I'll appreciate it more that way.) I've almost decided on the D5000. I found a blog that compared the D60, D3000, and D5000. They're mostly the same but the D5000 is better with some things.

Also.. I THINK I've seen the D5000 for about $750-$850. I believe it was at Best Buy.

I'm going for the D3000, just because the D5000 is more expensive actually.
Can't wait for my birthdaaay! :D

i have the d5000! its AMAZING. i love it. kind of like a poor man's d90..but not in a bad way, its just the d90 is too advanced for me right now - i like that the d5000 is smaller and more upper entry level, whatever that is.
GET IT. i got it pretty cheap in hong kong (and no. its not fake) - you should be able to find some pretty good prices. mine was about 500 quid, including a lens. but yeah..i totally recommend the d5000. i've used the d60 and while its a nice camera, i much prefer the d5000. besides, i looked around for a d60 and its pretty hard to get them now. depending on where you go, the d5000 retails for 500-620 pounds.

I tested the d5000 against the canon 450D and found the canon to have more viberant shots and quicker focus.

Check out dpreview.com to help what may be best for you.

i have it.
well i've heard canon is better, of course, but i guess nikon will do really well too.
i have it as my first dslr, and it's quite good for learning and stuff..
"The D5000 has a live view LCD, 12 megapixels, video mode, 11 point AF - which all sounds pretty exciting." Haha, the only thing among these I consider as a real benefit is the 11 point AF, at least so far.. I haven't made many videos nor printed large photos and the live screen is not so important either. especially the fact that it can be moved around. i haven't yet found it useful.
buuut.. yeah. maybe i'm just such a beginner in photography and don't know other cameras, but in my oppinion, d5000 is a quite average camera. happy to have it though :D.

Really? I find the most exciting thing the live view, I'm used to it so will probably find it easier for the transition.

Nikon and Canon...from what I've heard from photographer friends, everyone has a different opinion, but neither is really better than the other. But I don't know, I'm not a photographer :)

Yeah, obv, it's entry-level to intermediate I think. But in its type, I think it's really good :D

this camera was rated top on flickr.. flickr.com/cameras/canon/ for the top 5 canon cameras (left is #1 right is #5)

just b/c it's expensive doesn't mean it's good. a lot of people on flickr take great photos w/ cameras around $500 which is still expensive but i think you can take great photos w/o spending $1,000.

@Marge W.

Isn't that the 400d? that's too expensive for me.

I wasn't saying that expensive = good. I'm looking for an entry-level to intermediate DSLR and £500 seems to be a reasonable price, with the kit lens. I was originally going to get a D40 but we found it hard to get hold of one, and I like printing out photos really large.

I still love my point and shoot, I've taken some awesome photos with it :)
