How essential is it for a graphic designer?
Im pretty skilled with everything else (i.e. illustrator, photoshop, indesign, flash etc.)
I know you can make some really good money coding websites but i find it so hard for me to memorize the coding. I'd like to design websites, but the coding partis just so boring
I've tried using dreamweaver, its alright but can get frustrating at times.

Since the Internet is such an integral part of today's world, web design is a crucial skill necessary for most graphic designer. When you design something for an employer, they will most likely require you to integrate the work into their website. It's not that hard to memorize the coding, and once you've got the basics down, you can figure out how to use adobe dreamweaver. I find that basic web design is a lot easier that photoshop, but that's just me.

yeah, you can't do css without knowing html.
at my school, asking to take the css class without taking basic web design is like asking karl lagerfeld to stop wearing his hair in a ponytail and black & white. ain't nothin' gonna happen.

Back in my days before I gave up on graphics, web design is a great thing to be able to have as another appeal to a client.

and yeah, you can't do CSS without learning HTML, though I didn't learn CSS til a while after I knew HTML.

HTML is not a very big language anymore.
PHP is taking over.

Actually almost every site that is interactive is made of php.

I agree with ANDY however PHP incorporates HTML to an extent so it will need to be learnt! Athough I was talking to my dad about it and he said that every 5-10 years a different code comes out and takes over so it's worth knowing basics about others!

While basic HTML 4 is going to be going the way of the dinosaur slowly but surely, the things to really learn right now are going to be HTML 5 (with embedded video support) and CSS3 for starters - learning php is really good, but you should at least get a basic primer with HTML 5 and CSS before you jump in head first with php.

Another thing with designing and maintaining graphic design and photography sites is that you will want to decide on a good navigation system (like lookbook's for example) and a clean site layout that showcases the work.

Definitely learn it. It's so important to be a well rounded designer. I know how you feel though. I personally love web design, but illustration is something I really hate doing. Still, I'm taking a class on it, and I'm glad. There's always a chance a client will ask for an illustration to put on their website or something, and the last thing I'd want to do is give another designer my business, you know?

Anyway. If you need help with the coding, check out css-tricks.com. The site has so many tutorials that you can read. They're very easy to understand, and they cover everything from the absolute basics onward.

HTML & CSS is really easy to learn.
And then PHP is also really easy once you get the hang of it.
It's worth it. I haven't done anything with my knowledge of it in months though, so I'm forgetting all the codes! D=
