@Leah Rae K.
my college was a top five for art and they dont look at grades so much as true artists potential.
Work hard on your portfolio if you want to get into a school that is just art.
University that focus on academics are going to be more strict about grades, but serious art programs want artists, not so much scholars.
Grades help, but they're not the full focus.
my college's liberal arts classes were total crap. english math science- basically didn't exists, but the art classes were ridiculously difficult. Fun but extremely challenging.

I got mostly accepted to MICA and I'm really excited. I considered RISD at first, but it was just too expensive and didn't give enough scholarships and seemed a little boring. I liked the atmosphere at MICA a lot more. I think being an artist is totally a viable career as long as you realize you might not get to work in your dream field. Hopefully, if I work hard enough in college I'll get to be an illustrator like I want to be, but who knows.

New on lookbook here. But I'm a highschool senior at an art based high school, so of course I'm still going to continue my path with art. I got acceptances already to School of the Art Institute of Chicago and Savannah College of Art and Design. Both schools offered me scholarships, but I'm still looking into other schools like Rhode Island School of Design and Maryland Institute College of Art. I think in the end, I'm just gonna go to which ever one is the least expensive. :) I don't know what my major is yet but I have a strong interest in sculpture and mixed media. I've considered interior design, architecture, jewelry design and maybe fashion design.
Based on what everyone said, yes art is a risky career path but I believe that if you're talented enough and driven enough you will make it some day and you will be discovered. Hard work pays off. Aside from that, there's always a job out there for artists. Everything that surrounds us is art. The chair you're sitting in right now, that's a piece of art. The design of the seat and the legs and arms. Alone it could even be considered a sculpture. Another point everyone has brought up, yes art school is expensive. SAIC and MICA are around 45,000USD a year including housing, RISD is 50,000USD. Like I said, cross your fingers for scholarship money! Private schools give alot of it out especially in times like this because of the recession. More people are leaning toward public schools because they cost less, but private schools grant more money in scholarship, in hopes that you will attend. Bottom line, college is the best investment anyone can ever have. You're not just purchasing a degree, you're purchasing intelligence and knowledge and that can never ever be taken away. Sure you buy a house or a car, but when you miss those mortgage payments, the bank will come and take your house/car away. However, knowledge will always be within you.
Good luck to all of those still applying to colleges, I hope you get into the schools you want!
Good luck to those already in art schools, may you be discovered one day. :)
Lastly, anyone else applying to the SAIC, RISD, MICA, SCAD? Or have already been accepted? Or attending? Anyone, care to chat about the schools? Or share the feeling of college anticipation?
Au Revoir!

Currently studying art at the Sam Fox School within Washington University in St. Louis... which is known for its great medical program. The art school is the smallest within the university, but it's very intense and actually pretty impressive. Most art students here majorn communication design, which is really practical. I, however, want to do painting. I'm one of the cliché kids who wants to be an art teacher. Derp derp student loans for me.
To be honest I'm really glad I didn't apply to any big straight-up art schools like Otis or RISD. I got approached by those schools and a couple others at a portfolio day, but by then I had decided that I wasn't completely sure about doing art. So having the rest of a high quality university available has made me more comfortable in my choice. It's a good art program at an amazing university. I really do recommend that for students thinking of art school... don't snub art schools that don't stand alone with their big fancy names. Check out art schools within universities, because limiting yourself to only art is a bit dangerous unless you're absolutely sure it's what you want to do. And also you'll be able to take more interesting classes at a larger university and have more luck with financial aid.

I checked up Tyler, however they don't offer as much of a wide range compared to RISD, SAIC, and MICA. The BFA degrees seemed to be more limited as well. It's still a great school nonetheless, but I'm aiming toward a school that offers a little bit of everything. Luckily, I've found the candidates. But good luck on your application! I hope you get in! :)

Art is my life.
I'm currently an art history major,
working towards my doctorate.
I attend community college right now,
but I plan on attending Hunter up until my Masters,
then Pratt Institute for graduate school.
I'm planning on becoming a professor and possibly a curator.
I'd also like to open my own art gallery later in life.

You'd have to become famous to be able to make good money out of your paintings etc.. so thats why I think Graphic Design is the best way to make money out of your art.

The great thing about art is it doesn't require school! If you are an artist it will happen no matter what you can not stop it. I'm a self taught artist some useless classes in HS but mostly I just copied my idols until my own style developed.
This great considering I'm broke.

I'm going to NUCA art college to study photography, I'm pretty stoked. Although most of what I know is self-taught anyway so I don't know how much I will learn, but its more for the experience than anything, and the fact that a degree is a free pass to being taken seriously when applying for real jobs.

Art is really fun but at GCSE it is really structured and you have to do specific things which can make it really boring especially if the subject you are studying doesn't interest you. I'm doing it at A level and hopefully it'll be really good (:

Art is subjective.
Some people believe it's everywhere, others don't.
Just because art can be found in many places,
even everywhere to some...
Doesn't mean its "value" is lessened -
Especially concerning to the individual.

Im going to university this year to do fashion communications after doing two years fashion design and manufacture, communications is more photography, videography and journalism based so i will really miss making pretty sketches.
as for using sewing machines its not as fun as it looks. and mines nearly got thrown out the window. Theres alot of good art/fashion colleges in scotland and from what I hear they love oversea students =)
i would do terrible things to study and live in ameria haha
good luck if you do go onto an art based course follow your heart.

I've always enjoyed art and photography but never really thought about it as a career until about a year ago when I was already enrolled in a University as a Psychology Major. Now I am a graphic design major concentrating in photography. The school I go to has an excellent program. But if I had to go back I probably would have chosen a larger school with a more selective program. Everyone is accepted into this program. While it is challenging it is not the best program around. It's not an art school but I admire the teachers because they all have real life experience and are focused on helping us build portfolio pieces.
I expect to make a career out it when I graduate, but I'm not banking on it and will probably be bartender to pay the bills for a few years.

my mom is a fashion designer and my dad was in the fashion buisness too so i kind of grew up in the fashion world. all i want to do is be a fashion designer, and of course my parents are kind of scared since they know how hard it is but its my passion. im currently a sophmore in HS and i just recieved a scholarship from otis to be in there summer of art program for fashion design. i got one of the highest scholarships which includes houseing (even though i already live in LA), food, and supplys. im not very book smart and really struggle in hs to get good grades. i just dont understand school and get bored easly. im more of a artsy visual person lol.
my dream was to go to parsons in NY but i dont think my gpa is good enough. my other options are fit otis or a art school like academy of art or something. i refuse to go to fidm. haha
i want to wish everyone luck in the art schooling and may the best come to you! XO

They have a 90% job placement too. Also U.S. News & World Report ranks them as the TOP 4th art school in USA. :)
Good luck on SCAD! I'm sure you'll make it.

This september I'm doing an Art Foundation diploma. It's good because it only lasts one year and you pretty much experiment with all kinds of mediums, from ceramics to textile design.
I hate academic subjects so this is the only option for me, unless I want to become a full time waitress and live a life of complaining OAPs whose tea is too hot and creepy men that give you £14 tips...

Well I do A level Art and I love it so so much. Despite it being very structured, I still get to do what I like and I like how your work grows, improves and develops- pretty fascinating and fun.
I was going to study fine art at university but I don't think it's the right choice for me. As much as I love art, for me studying fine art at uni is so risky as in terms of money (yes I know people want to do what they love, heck I would do art) but it's just a realistic perspective. I just want to be secure and then after I can take the plunge and be an artist. It was horrible coming to this realisation, especially as an art person came to my school exhibition and thought I had potential and would do really well in art :(. I think I will do an English Literature degree(as I love English too, and I think I'll miss studying geeek ahaa) degree but keep on painting and drawing on the side until I hopefully get my big break as an artist.
I guess if you wanna be an art teacher or graphic designer then that's great. I commend people doing art based degrees and I think it's great...just think about it and be 100% sure that that's all you want to do...especially when you can do something a bit more academic and do it on the side where you're more secure.
As I always say: if art's your calling, it will inevitably happen anyway...no matter what you're doing. Food for thought :).

I go to UCLA for Fine Art. It's one of the top programs in the nation with a faculty that consists of Barbara Kruger, Mary Kelly, James Welling, Catherine Opie, Lari Pittman, Hirsh Perlman, Charles Ray and many more! Incredibly critical program. It won't teach you technical skills, but it isn't a design school, so that's not as important. BUT UCLA also has one of the top design programs as well; also highly conceptual.

If art didn't exist then life would be so mundane and dismal. I think that a lot of truly amazing art gets ignored whereas the crappy art gets most of the attention. Anyway, In the fall I will be a freshmen at Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and I can't wait! I plan on majoring in Sculpture or illustration or maybe, but very unlikely, fashion design.

I'm currently grappling with the harsh reality that doing a painting major with a minor in French isn't going to give me many opportunities.

Depending on your major the out look for jobs and the amount of money varies dramatically! I go to College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Michigan. It is known for automotive design but a lot of talented people in all areas emerge! I am studying graphic design/advertising design, kind of more commercial so more acceptable in my community and higher likelihood of getting a job. Going to art school was the best decision I've ever made IN MY LIFE, I don't regret it AT ALL, it's a magical experience it really is ; )

With all the in mind, I'm hoping to work in Advertising cause this is where I'm most interested in in terms of graphics and design in general. :)
I did get accepted to an art school but I just couldn't see myself in a really strict art only kinda program so I opted to go to a school less known for it but with more variety.
