I just went on Facebook and saw the post, 'This is an official announcement that as of today, LOOKBOOK.nu is now an open community.'
Many people have written that they dislike this change, stating that the website will become overloaded with people posting looks with little or no fashionable input, and that the site will soon fail to live up it's description of, 'collective fashion consciousness.'
I just wanted to know what everyone else thought.

The only wrong: It's just a bit unfair that many of Lookbook's loyal users had to apply for an account, but now it's just a free-for-all sign up.
I'm not necessarily saying that new users should have to go through some hassle to sign up... but it is unfair to those who did have to.

This is only my opinion, but here goes....
I am ALOT older than most of you, but still, I love fashion and lookbook has always been inspirational to me in finding what styles I like and what I aspire to wear...even at my ripe old age...
I wanted to join but in the summer of 2009 I applied but never heard back...so I contacted a lookbook member whose styles I admired, and asked him if he would be willing to invite me to join.
And he did.

I didn't like it to begin with, just because I joined by invite and it just felt really good to be a part of this. But then I realised how good it is, more looks, more on the forums, more hype going round, more inspiration, which is always good :)

I definitely agree that it will get a lot of new users and I think it will probably have some problems, and lookbook was never perfect to begin with. I know that even when it was private I had issues uploading looks and then being able to edit or delete looks, things of that nature. I use tumblr a lot and I used it before it got to be popular, but now that it has so many new users, it seems like it's always down for maintenance or something. I'm afraid that will happen here too. :(

i agree with some of you. What's the problem? If you don't like their look, just don't hype them. You got invitation, so you're better than me?No way!

I am a new member, well a VERY new member, but I think that the idea of "collective fashion consciousness" is being able to see how individuals from all over the world are styling themselves and showcasing what they view as fashionable...do I like every look I see, no. However, being able to draw from other people's ideas and seeing so many different takes on a trend is so fascinating to me. I absolutely love fashion and I'm very particular about what looks I intend to post because I know this isn't a "look what I wore to the mall" type of site.

I LOVE the new system. I'm from Iowa so like no one has a lookbook here, especially no one I know...I think it's good everyone is given a chance to express their fashion :)

at first I thought that it was too bad. I looked at lookbook as a place where people who were fashionable and who was "allowed" to be on here, caused to good style. and i too thought that it could cause overload of new members (not nesacarily well styled) on the NEW-look page and in the forums.
But then again: yes it says "collective fashion conciousness" so it would be stupid not to make it an open community. the filter makes the old lookbookers and the "well-hyped" lookbookers have a place that would not overload with new members' looks. then again, If everyone keeps the filters on, the new ones might not get any hype.
It's a difficult question and I'm both for it and against it.

Wow, I actually can't believe some people. Most of you sound pretty stuck up. So you got an invite and that instantly makes you so much better and anyone who didn't get invited is shit? Uh, no.
"Collective fashion consciousness" means anyone, not those who are special enough to get invited.
You had to work for your invites, and now new members have to work hard to get noticed. If they post shit looks, simple, they won't get hyped. You see loads of new members complaining about the karma filter, and that's because it does what it's supposed to.
As someone who didn't join via invite, I feel like I've instantly been labelled as some who doesn't actually give a shit about fashion and posts shit camera phone mirror looks. It's making me feel like I'm not allowed to be here because I'm not 'special' or 'elite' enough.
If everyone is so bothered by this, then just leave? Because it's probably not going to get changed back. And if you don't want to see shit looks, put your karma filter on, because they will never get past that, let alone onto the hot page. Problem solved.
And isn't it so much nicer to have more people in the forums? There's more opinions, new questions being brought up, and there is so, so much more inspiration flying around. You don't need to have been invited to be able to inspire someone.
Of course my argument is biased, I'm not gonna say 'yeah I shouldn't be allowed here', but I do think some should open up their minds a bit. Labelling new members and saying they shouldn't be allowed here just because they hadn't heard of the site a few years ago isn't fair. Give them a chance before you try and chuck them out.

Most of you surely won't agree, but I think that the fact that lookbook is now public does not make it worse. I'm also sure that you will all reply that I say this because I'm a new member.
My maximum hype is anyway 14, those that were invited and that have been on lookbook for long have hundreds of hypes...why does it bother you that other people express themselves?
If you don't like the new users' look don't hype them, if one gets no hype maybe will close his/her account.

not really, because the people with no or little fashionable input wouldn't really receive many hypes, and they would eventually give up.

won't they ever close back the inscriptions ? I was just watching the "new" section, and there is one more look every minute...
for me it's not about being 'fashionable', it's bad because now there are too much people, and everything is going too fast, it's a kind of waste. Soon you won't even have to wait 6 hours between two looks and we will be happily spammed lol

if lookbook wasn't open now I would probably never get to be a member. Many people may not look like models but they are still stylish and deserve and want to ask for advice and so on.
I loved lookbook before because It was a place where I could see tons of fashion and get inspired but now I am glad I can be a part of it too.

When LB was made open, it lost its way completely
It used to be about the select few, the most inspiring, the individuals who shaped trends and created new ones.
Now the site is full of hype beggers, hipsters and thousands of girls wearing denim shorts.

I'm totally against it. I had to apply and wait to get accepted on here. That should be the case for everyone. I found just recently found out that lookbook had made it open to anyone when my friend just signed up and made a profile. Thank God she actually has fashion sense. But what are they gonna do when random un-fashionable people start creating a profile? (oops too late) I already ran across a few. Its annoying. and as you said before the site will soon fail to live up it's description of collective fashion consciousness. Oh how dissapointing..

I don't understand the distress that's STILL being caused by this, when it happened so long ago.
I've seen plenty of pre-open OGs with poor picture quality and just plain ugly fashion choices and I've seen plenty of post-open members with brilliant photos and brilliant clothes.
What a lot of people seem to be forgetting is that not everyone who joined since it became open is going to have awful fashion sense and poor photos - some would have made it in when it was invite only but perhaps only found lookbook after the switch - so to get so uppity about it seems bizarre.

I don't think that it has anything to do with feeling special for me. I've been with lookbook for a while but I wanted to make sure I was in a position I could post good photographs before I started posting mediocre images.
However, someone above mentioned that LookBook is fashion; if you think of a fashion curve that may be a good example of what might happen to the site. It's exciting for me, as someone who loves fashion, to wear things that are different from everyone else, but as soon as the majority of the population finds it and starts wearing it, it's time to move on.
This isn't to say that the newer members might not have good style, but it seems like a fair generalization to say that the harder you have to work to obtain something the more you are interested in and want it.
Lookbook is like a hidden gem. Only people that are constantly keeping up with fashion know about it for now, but if somehow it became the cool thing to do then I'd be worried about the style quality decreasing.

What comforts me about this place is that I know no one IRL who's even heard of the place. So for me, it's still a safe sanctuary, not yet 'the cool thing' like Naz I. said.
I see why OGs are/were annoyed, some of them anyway, but there's obviously no going back, and there is definitely still plenty of the highest quality style to be found on this site.

Ive noticed the abundance in people stressing over getting hypes and some kind of 'hype for hype' and 'fan for fan' system... Kind of dissapointing since it's about hyping looks you like. Not scrolling down the list and commenting every one to ask for that. That never happened before I dont think.

I'm a new member, so take what I write with a grain of salt, but please read it. I'll try to keep it short.
Think of this:
-How did Lookbook guess which applicants to the site were worthy before it became an open community? I have no idea how, but sounds like it would be random/if you gave a good enough excuse. I feel like this would have only excluded many valuable members from all over the world.
-Lookbook still gives it's older (and therefore more established) members a preference and head-start. The system is built that way. People with more fans and karma will always be on the New list, and higher on the Hot list than anyone else. And you are more likely to have more fans and more karma if you've been around longer an have more looks.
-New members do not even feature on the New list for a long time even if they get many Hypes, because of the bias against them. This also keeps them from being seen and becoming popular.
-From what I can tell, you tell an older invite-only member from a new open-invite member by having a quick look on their profile and checking to see when they joined. Older members have "OG since" instead of "member since" before the date that shows when they joined. If you have such a big bias in this argument you don't have to "accidentally" fan a open-invite person.
