Is anybody planning on taking a gap year to travel or work etc? Or has anybody previously taken a gap year?

something adults encourage young people to do, completely disregarding the fact that we have no money and will soon be in debt from student loans.

Everyone I know who's done a gap year this year has had to postpone any dreams of travelling far away since they're finding it really difficult to get a short-term job before starting uni. My friend has had to spend most of his time on gap year playing video games and watching terrible TV rather than getting to earn money or go travelling.

That's not good at all. Thankfully I already have a job, so that should be a problem, so long as I still have on in a year!

I went to work straight after secondary school. I liked it, it's given me a great deal of experience and a shitload of money as well. Now I'm in college, but I kind of bailed out (I stopped going to half of my classes and am only doing half of my exams) so who knows what lies ahead.
I might take another year off. Possibly to work as an au pair. But nothing is certain right now.

I'm gonna be honest, all the people I've met who have done travel gap years (not actual working) before going off to school have come back with massively inflated egos, a huge sense of entitlement, and a disdain for anyone who doesn't want to do the same thing (often times because they're bitter about only getting deferred admission at their top school). An example comparison:
Girl A went to France on a gap year and just partied with French teenagers and thinks anyone who doesn't want to go to France on a gap year is a "close-minded bigot and shouldn't even be allowed to go to college."
Girl B, with whom I've been living briefly, went to France on a gap year and taught English, and she is now very self-reliant and not a cunt.
Sooo yeah. I'd say keep yourself busy. Become more awesome, not cuntier.

I'd like to go to India, maybe the far east or australia, teach in Costa Rica and do a USA summer camp placement. But I'm not sure yet. I think I'll probably go in January 2012

I'm coming to the end of a Gap Year and I've really enjoyed it. I've worked for the majority of it but got to go to Milan as well which was a dream of mine, I hoped to go to Paris too before starting Uni but after buying my Leeds Festival ticket and buying lots of beautiful clothes with my wages I'll have to wait.
Two of my friends went to India and South East Asia for 8 months and they thought it was amazing. They got back a few days ago and said it's odd to be back but they're so pleased they went. I don't think they have inflated egos either just for the record.

No, everything that I write is backed up by decades of scientific research.
Also, it's not a generalization if genuinely every single person I've met who hasn't worked on a gap year has ended up with serious 'tude problemos. Just stating personal experience about my shitty luck in meeting gap year students.
