How do you rip/shred/cut tights well?

I really suck at ripping my tights. It just turns out to be one big hole.

The trick is to use scissors to make small holes and pull them to make then grow like ladders.
To create the larger holes like in the photos you would need to make bigger cuts.... My best guess to make sure they dont all just bleed into one massive hole is to use clear nail polish which is what i do which stop the holes where you want them to...
This is my estimated guess in design holes like that, usually I just get holes without meaning to.

that works. a disposable razor also works well if you're careful with it to make these neat bubble rips. it's one of these things that will never be exact, you have to kind of freeform it.

all of my ripped tights came about from just picking at them on accident
if you make a tiny tear, they just unravel from there

how hard can it be? just rip them with your fingers and then use clear nail varnish around the edges to stop them from ripping even further.
seriously.... it doesn't matter if you fuck them up. just don't go out and buy ridiculously expensive tights.

I rub my knees falling all of the time, so that's where mine came from LOL.
I would think if you pull at them hard enough they'll rip! I've heard if you spray hairspray on the edges of the rips it'll keep them from tearing any further.

i just rub the sharp side of the scissors along the tights, and poke them through in a few places, then stretch them out and stuff. works well =]

use velcro. find the sharp/catchy side of the velcro, then stick it to your leg while wearing the tights. when you rip it off, little tiny hair-looking things should come out of the knit. cut them and then stretch/pull vertically around the snag, it should run.

i just put a pair of tights on, then get a disposable and shave my legs as if i wasn't wearing tights. then you get loads of little holes and you can just pull on them and tug, and it works out quite well.

I did it with a small really sharp knife, that goes easier than scissors.
And then rip them a bit apart. So that you get little holes.

I used a cuticle cutter thing I had lying around in a manicure set. I haven't tries this with tights yet but with ribbons I light a match and let the synthetic fibers melt to keep them from from fraying. I think it would also work to keep tights from ripping further than you want them to! Just get the match close enough to melt the fiber it doesn't actually have to touch.

ive used a seam ripper to rip shorts, shirts, and tights, and theyve all come out pretty good. just start plucking seam by seam and pull a little.

but how do you stop it all from running once you've got it perfect? when i put them on, the holes/runs run even more.

I put them on & then scratched them with a comb until I got little snags. Then I picked at the snags and they formed ladders & holes.
oh, & to stop the running, use clear nail polish remover around the edges of the holes, but I usually don't do that. I just let them keep naturally ripping.
If you wanna see the pair I made check out my latest look.
Hope I helped

I have a question about the clear nail polish part of ripping tights- basically, how meticulous do I have to be with it? Will it come off when I wash them, and come apart anyways?
I also do that thing where you put the ends of a ribbon near an open flame to let the frayed edges melt together to keep from fraying more. Has anyone here tried that with tights? I'm kinda scared to do it hah because I'm likely to just melt the whole thing :p
Sorry about all the questions!
